The Book of Kells
Thankfully, the book of kells has survived for well over 1’000 years and has been the source and the inspiration for Ireland's Celtic Art which is recognised and admired throughout the world. The detail, intricacy and creativity has been copied, reproduced and borrowed throughout the centuries but has never been equalled. It was produced at a time when Ireland was known as the Island of Saints and Scholars when peace and prosperity encouraged a flourishing of creativity and artistic achievement. The country had also embraced Christianity which provided a wealth of imagery for the ancient artists.
In this collection, I have focused on the finer detail in the pages of the book of kells. A closer inspection reveals the most beautifully complete designs that transfer across the mediums effortlessly. The designs I use are almost entirely unchanged from their appearance on the pages of the book of kells and special attention has been given to ensure that dimensions are maintained.
Contrast is provided in the pieces with the use of silver oxidation and, in some cases, the inclusion of semi-precious stones to reflect the colourful pages. The challenge of creating a collection inspired by such a rich source of inspiration was daunting but remains one of the most wonderful experiences I have ever had as an artist.
